Michal Lyons 1950-2013

we remember her

Professor Michal Lyons died in February 2013 after bravely fighting the recurrence of cancer. Michal was an internationally recognised expert in international development. She researched, published, and edited many books and articles on the subject and carried out fieldwork in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Michal joined London South Bank University in 1988, and during her distinguished career made a substantial contribution to teaching and research in Development Studies both in the university and on the wider international stage. Michal managed funding for projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Eastern Europe. She consulted widely with Non-Governmental Organisations and served on the editorial boards of several journals.

Life moves on, for Michal's friends and family no less than for the rest of the world. We still miss her daily, but our futures fill more of our lives. Remembrance is now reserved for quiet moments of contemplation and sorrow of a more private nature. The early enthusiasm for the Memorial Fund and the Michal Lyons Foundation has been tempered, and the consistent investment of time and money to manage them is no longer available. Our memorial pages have therefore been moved to a more private place, and the Fund is closed.
